Optimisation of Heat Loss through Ventilation for Residential Buildings
2018
This study presents the results of research on heat loss from various types of residential buildings through ventilation systems. Experimental research was done to analyse the effectiveness of ventilation systems of different types and determine the parameters of air discharged via the ventilation ducts. A model of heat loss from the discharge of exhaust air outside through air ducts has since been developed. Experiments were conducted on three experimental systems of building ventilation: gravitational, mechanical, and supply-exhaust ventilation systems with heat recovery. The proposed model dependencies were used to chart the daily fluctuations of the optimum multiplicity of air exchange …
Simplified Energy Model and Multi-Objective Energy Consumption Optimization of a Residential House
2022
Featured Application: The potential application of the proposed model is a computationally inexpensive semi- or fully automated system for the optimization of operation in residential buildings in terms of energy consumption. Some analyses state that buildings contribute to overall energy consumption by 20–40%, which, in the context of the recent geopolitical energy crisis, makes them a critical issue to study. Finding solutions for better energy management in buildings can have a significant impact on the energy sector, thus reducing EU energy dependencies and contributing to the fulfillment of the REPowerEU goals. This paper focuses on proposing a simplified model of a residential house c…
Stochastic model for electrical loads in Mediterranean residential building: validation and applications
2014
A major issue in modelling the electrical load of residential building is reproducing the variability between dwellings due to the stochastic use of different electrical equipment. In that sense and with the objective to reproduce this variability, a stochastic model to obtain load profiles of household electricity is developed. The model is based on a probabilistic approach and is developed using data from the Mediterranean region of Spain. A detailed validation of the model has been done, analysing and comparing the results with Spanish and European data. The results of the validation show that the model is able to reproduce the most important features of the residential electrical consum…
Unintended Effects of Energy Efficiency Policy: Lessons Learned in the Residential Sector
2021
The European Union has set an ambitious goal to tackle climate change, and energy efficiency in the residential sector is among the measures required to close the gap between targeted and actual greenhouse gas emissions. While different policy tools have been applied, the diffusion rate of these measures remains low. A system dynamics simulation model of the residential sector was developed to assess the advantages and drawbacks of energy efficiency policy in the multi-family building sector based on experience accumulated over the last twelve years in Latvia. The model was validated in expert group model building sessions and with historical trends. Simulating the model, a hypothesis was t…
The effect of balconies on energy efficiency of multi-unit residential buildings: A state of art review
2019
Multi-unit residential buildings (MURBs) has become common in urban areas in order to accommodate the demands of the increasing urban population and make use of limited urban land. These buildings are high consumers of energy and natural resources with significant carbon footprints. Efforts are hence needed to make new and existing MURBs more energy efficient and environmentally. Balconies in MURBs can help decrease operational energy in addition to providing a connection to the outdoor environment for the residents. If properly designed, MURBs balconies in cold climates can help in enhancing solar gains while in warm climates, they can be useful in providing a sub-space capable of cooling …
